The lion and the sun are rich in symbolism, especially in illuminated and alchemic manuscripts.
The lion often represents strength, courage, and royalty. In alchemy, it can symbolize the *philosophical sulfur*, a key element in the process of transformation, associated with fire and the active principle. The lion might also represent raw, untamed energy that must be refined. This plate is named Lapidem Philosophicum or “Philosopher’s Stone” directly referencing the alchemical goal of transformation.
The sun is a universal symbol of enlightenment, life, and divine essence. In alchemy, it corresponds to gold and the masculine principle, often linked to the ultimate goal of transformation or perfection (the philosopher’s stone).
When combined, the lion and the sun often signify the harmony of strength and enlightenment. They can also represent the union of earthly and divine energies, the balance of raw power and higher purpose. In some contexts, they are linked to astrological symbols like Leo and the Sun, reinforcing themes of vitality and leadership.
Hand built and hand painted with traditional oxide pigments.
